Suggestions (from you to you) to keep in mind while writing your college essays:

1. Keep your writing interesting; Use adjectives, lively verbs, incorporate humor (or your true personality), use specific details.
2. Take risks in your writing. If you have a wild idea, and you're not sure if it is good or not, try it anyway--through revision we will consider whether it is effective or not. Chances are, we can make it work.
3. Your responses should be focused and specific. Instead of telling how every route your life has taken has lead you to be who you are and where you are, write a focused specific story or experience that demonstrates the essence of who you are.
4. Use concrete details to create imagery, so your reader can experience the story you are telling authentically.
5. Show your story, don't just tell: Write the images in your story as though you are writing it for a short film. Let your reader see where you are taking them.
6. Use metaphors and other literary devices at your disposal. Mr. Owens will take you through some strategies to help you incorporate figurative language into your writing.
7. Make sure your college essay is personal and sincere. The college admissions staff will connect with your true self more authentically than an egotistically inflated version of yourself. Flaunt your flaws and mistakes--Just be sure to show the person reading your essay that you are the kind of student who will be reflective and learn from life experiences.
